Development Stages and According SEL Milestones

Each stage of child development is focusing on different developmental stages. Identify normal milestones and activities to help those milestones develop appropriately is paramount to successful SEL through life. 

Infancy 

Infant development starts to happen as soon as the baby is born and the bond between mother and baby is starting to form outside of the whom. 

- Maternal-Fetal attachment

- Adult attachment (how does the infant's caregiver respond to other adults) (Branjerdporn et al., 2022).

 

Toddlerhood

Toddlers start to become more mobile and independent figuring out the world around them more each day. Developmentally learning so quickly. This time frame is important foundation for future learning.

- Showing more independence

- Learning to copy noises and movements of others

- Expressing more emotions towards others (Babies and Toddlers: Developmental Milestones, n.d.).

 

Early Childhood

Early childhood development is becoming more aware of others around them and starting to have empath for others. Thought becomes more complex, beginning to create friendships. 

- Start explaining feelings

- Begin social play 

- Follow directions

- Starting to learn emotional regulation (Riley Children's Health, 2019).
